Every proper deep clean covers these eight zones, in this order. Skipping any one of them leaves the job unfinished — and Zone 7 (behind the toilet) is where 90% of home cleaners lose points.

Zone 1: Inside the bowl Zone 2: Under the rim Zone 3: Toilet tank (inside) Zone 4: Tank exterior and flush handle Zone 5: Seat, lid, and hinges Zone 6: Bowl exterior and base Zone 7: Behind and around the toilet Zone 8: Floor at the base

Let’s go through each one.

Zone 1: Inside the Bowl

Here’s the step most people rush: applying cleaner and immediately scrubbing. Toilet bowl cleaners need 10–15 minutes of contact time to actually break down mineral deposits, bacteria, and hard water stains. Scrubbing right away wastes 80% of the product.

Step 1: Flush the toilet to wet the bowl surface.

Step 2: Squirt toilet bowl cleaner in a full circle under the rim. This is critical — the rim is where cleaner drips down and coats the entire bowl. Don’t just squirt in the water.

Step 3: Add another squeeze directly into the standing water. This is what disinfects below the waterline.

Step 4: Walk away. Let it sit while you clean everything else. 15 minutes minimum. This is not optional.

Zone 2: Under the Rim

While the cleaner works, get your tools ready — but before scrubbing, understand what’s actually under the rim.

Under most toilet rims there are small water jets. Mineral deposits and biofilm build up around these jets and cause two problems: reduced flush power and lingering odor even when the bowl looks clean.

When you come back to scrub (after Zone 5):

Use your toilet brush and press firmly upward against the underside of the rim, scrubbing in a full circle. Get the brush bristles into every jet hole. If your brush is too soft to reach, an old dish scrub brush or a bent bottle brush works better.

For heavy mineral buildup: soak paper towels in white vinegar, tuck them up under the rim, and let them sit 30 minutes before scrubbing. The vinegar dissolves the deposits.

Zone 3: Toilet Tank (Inside)

Almost nobody cleans inside the tank. That’s a mistake — if the tank has mineral buildup, black mold, or discoloration, that dirty water fills the bowl every single flush. You can’t get a clean bowl from a dirty tank.

How often: Every 3–4 months for most homes. Every 1–2 months if you have hard water (like most of Waterford and Oakland County).

How to clean it:

1. Remove the tank lid carefully — set it on a towel to protect it
2. Look inside. If you see rust, black spots, or mineral scale — you need to clean it
3. Pour 1 cup of white vinegar into the tank
4. Let it sit for 1 hour (do not flush during this time)
5. Use a toilet brush or long-handled scrub brush to scrub the tank walls and around the flush mechanism
6. Flush 2–3 times to rinse

Warning: Do not use bleach in the tank. Bleach corrodes the rubber gaskets and metal parts of the flush mechanism. Vinegar is safe. If you have severe buildup, use a product specifically labeled safe for toilet tanks.

Zone 4: Tank Exterior and Flush Handle

The flush handle is the single highest-touch, least-cleaned surface in most bathrooms. Studies have shown it harbors more bacteria per square inch than the seat — because everyone touches it right after using the toilet, before washing their hands.

Method:

1. Spray disinfectant on a microfiber cloth (not directly on the surface — spray drift can damage nearby items)
2. Wipe the flush handle thoroughly, including underneath and where it meets the tank
3. Wipe the top, sides, and back of the tank
4. Get into the tight space between the tank and the wall
5. Let disinfectant sit 30 seconds before wiping dry — this is the required contact time for it to actually kill bacteria

Zone 5: Seat, Lid, and Hinges

Here’s where the toothbrush earns its place.

The seat surface: Spray disinfectant, let it sit 30 seconds, wipe with microfiber. Both sides — top and underside.

The lid: Same process — top and underside.

The hinges (this is the missed spot):

The plastic hinges that connect the seat to the toilet are where urine splatter, dust, and cleaning residue combine into a gross yellow crust. Most cleaners never get in there.

Use your old toothbrush with a mix of dish soap and warm water. Scrub around every hinge, along the seam where the seat meets the porcelain, and inside the bolt covers. If the crust is heavy, apply baking soda paste, let it sit 5 minutes, then scrub.

Bonus tip: Most toilet seats can be removed for a full deep clean. Look for a small plastic tab on the hinge base — press or lift it, and the seat lifts off. Once a month, removing the seat and cleaning under it makes a huge difference.

Zone 6: Bowl Exterior and Base

Spray disinfectant on a microfiber cloth and work top to bottom:

• The outside of the bowl rim
• The sides of the bowl
• The pedestal (the vertical part connecting bowl to base)
• The base — the wide flat part sitting on the floor

For the seam where the base meets the floor: use your toothbrush. This seam collects hair, dust, and urine splatter constantly and is often skipped entirely.

Zone 7: Behind and Around the Toilet

This is the biggest deep clean signal. When our team walks into a home for the first time, we can tell whether previous cleans were surface-only or actual deep cleans just by looking behind the toilet.

What accumulates behind the toilet:

• Dust bunnies (behind toilets is one of the worst dust magnets in any home)
• Cobwebs
• Hair
• Urine splatter on the wall and baseboard
• Cleaning product residue

How to clean it properly:

1. Get down on your knees with a flashlight if you have to. Actually look at what’s back there.
2. Use a long-handled duster to sweep out dust and cobwebs first
3. Spray disinfectant on a microfiber cloth (not directly — you don’t want overspray on your walls)
4. Wipe the back of the toilet tank
5. Wipe the wall behind the toilet
6. Wipe the baseboards
7. Wipe the water shut-off valve and pipe leading into the toilet

If you have small kids or male household members, don’t skip the wall behind the toilet. That’s where splatter accumulates.

Zone 8: Floor at the Base

Finally — the floor around the toilet.

The seal between the toilet base and the floor is where hair, dust, and urine build up in a dark line most people never notice until they get down to eye level with it.

Method:

1. Spray floor cleaner or disinfectant on a microfiber cloth
2. Wipe all around the base of the toilet
3. Use your toothbrush along the caulk line where the toilet meets the floor
4. Mop the surrounding tile or vinyl

If the caulk line around your toilet base is yellow or discolored — it may need to be replaced. That’s a different project, but a fresh white caulk line makes any bathroom look dramatically cleaner.

Now Come Back to Zone 1: Finish the Bowl

By now the toilet bowl cleaner has been sitting 15–20 minutes. It’s ready.

Step 1: With the toilet brush, scrub under the rim in a full circle. Press firmly.

Step 2: Scrub the sides of the bowl in overlapping strokes, top to bottom.

Step 3: Scrub the bottom of the bowl and the drain hole area.

Step 4: Flush. Continue scrubbing as the water refills — the fresh water helps rinse the cleaner off the surfaces.

Step 5: Once refilled, do one final scrub of any spots that still look off.

Step 6: Rinse your toilet brush in the fresh bowl water and shake dry. Place it back in its holder — then wipe the holder with disinfectant too. A dirty brush holder recontaminates the brush.

Waterford-specific note: Because Oakland County has notably hard water, we recommend our clients here run a vinegar tank clean every 4–6 weeks. Otherwise mineral buildup causes flush issues and permanent staining over time.

Not letting cleaner sit long enough. This is #1 by a mile. Contact time is what makes the product work.

Using the same cloth for the toilet and the sink. Bacteria transfer. Always dedicated cloths.

Mixing bleach with vinegar or other cleaners. Creates toxic fumes. Never combine.

Cleaning the outside first, then the inside. The bowl brush splashes water everywhere — always finish the inside last, or you’ll re-contaminate cleaned surfaces.

Using pumice on a stained bowl carelessly. Pumice can scratch porcelain if used dry or with too much pressure. Only use it wet, gently, and on genuine mineral deposits — not general stains. See our stained toilet guide for the right approach here.

Ignoring the tank. As covered above — a dirty tank makes clean bowl impossible.

Skipping the flush handle. Highest-touch surface, most neglected. Every time.

Deep cleaning a toilet is doable at home if you have the time and the right tools. But if any of these apply, professional help pays for itself:

General Areas (Every Room)

These tasks apply to every room in the house — bedrooms, living room, dining room, hallways, and any other space. Do these first before diving into room-specific tasks.

• Cobwebs — Check ceiling corners, light fixtures, and air vents. Use an extendable duster. Previous owners may have missed these entirely.
• Ceiling fans and light fixtures — Wipe fan blades (they collect dust fast), light covers, and bulb surrounds. Turn off the power before wiping near fixtures.
• Air vents — Remove vent covers if possible and wipe them down. Built-up dust in vents circulates through your entire home every time the HVAC runs.
• Baseboards and door frames — Hand-wipe every baseboard in the home. This is one of the most commonly skipped areas in any cleaning, and it’s where years of dust, pet hair, and grime accumulate.
• Light switches and outlets — Sanitize every switch plate and outlet cover. These are the highest-touch surfaces in any home.
• Door handles and knobs — Disinfect both sides of every door handle, including closets and interior doors.
• Window sills and tracks — Vacuum the tracks first (they collect debris and dead insects), then wipe with a damp cloth. For stuck-on grime in tracks, use an old toothbrush.
• Closets — Wipe inside and outside of all shelving, rods, and closet walls. Check corners for signs of moisture or mold.
• Floors — Deep vacuum all carpets and hard floors, including corners and along baseboards. Mop hard floors with a diluted floor cleaner.

Kitchen

The kitchen is almost always the most labor-intensive room in a move-in clean. Previous owners cooked here for years — and grease travels further than you think.

Cabinets and drawers:

• Wipe inside and outside of every cabinet and drawer — top, sides, bottom, and the inside of the door
• Pay attention to the upper cabinets near the stove: grease vapor rises and coats them over time
• Remove and clean drawer liners if present, or add new ones
• Check for signs of pests in lower corner cabinets

Countertops and backsplash:

• Scrub and disinfect all countertop surfaces
• For tile backsplash, scrub grout lines with a brush — grease and food residue builds up in grout near the stove
• Check caulk lines where countertops meet the wall for mold or discoloration

Stovetop and oven:

• Degrease the stovetop surface, burner grates, and control knobs
• Clean the area under the burner grates — this is almost always overlooked
• For the oven interior: apply oven cleaner, let it sit per product instructions, then wipe thoroughly. This is offered as an add-on in our GoShineUp move-in service.

Sink and faucets:

• Scrub the sink basin with a non-abrasive cleaner
• Remove limescale from the faucet using white vinegar on a cloth (wrap it around the faucet head and let it sit 10–15 minutes)
• Clean the drain strainer and run hot water after cleaning

Appliances:

• Refrigerator exterior: wipe down all surfaces including the top, handles, and the rubber door seal
• Refrigerator interior: if it’s included with the home, clean every shelf, drawer, and the interior walls (this is a GoShineUp add-on service)
• Dishwasher: run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner tablet. Wipe the door seal and inside of the door
• Microwave: use the steam method — bowl of water and vinegar, 3–5 minutes, then wipe interior. Clean inside and out.

Floors:

• Sweep and deep mop, paying attention to the area under where appliances sit

Bathrooms

Toilet:

• Apply bowl cleaner under the rim first and let it sit while you clean everything else
• Scrub and disinfect: flush handle, tank lid and sides, seat (both sides), bowl exterior, and the base
• Behind the toilet — get down there. Dust, hair, and residue collect here constantly
• Scrub the bowl interior under the rim and flush

Bathtub and shower:

• Scrub all tile surfaces with disinfectant
• Treat grout lines with baking soda paste and a brush — soap scum and mold live in grout
• Clean showerhead: soak in white vinegar bag for 20–30 minutes to dissolve mineral deposits
• Scrub the tub basin or shower floor

Sink and vanity:

• Scrub the sink basin, faucet, and drain
• Wipe inside and outside of all vanity cabinets and drawers
• Clean the mirror (glass cleaner on a microfiber cloth, not the mirror directly)

Floors, vents, and fixtures:

• Sanitize, vacuum, and mop the floor
• Clean the exhaust fan cover — this one is almost always full of dust
• Wipe light fixtures and check that all are working

Entryway and Hallways

• Front and back doors — clean both sides of exterior doors, including the glass panels and door handles. Wipe the door frame and threshold.
• Mirrors and glass partitions — polish with streak-free glass cleaner
• Coat closet — wipe all shelving, the rod, and the closet walls
• Floors — vacuum and mop, paying attention to the threshold where dirt enters the home first

Bedrooms

Bedrooms are usually lighter work, but don’t skip these:

• Closet shelving — wipe thoroughly, including the back wall
• Window sills, tracks, and blinds
• Ceiling fan and light fixture
• Baseboards
• Floors — vacuum carpets, mop hard floors

Laundry Room

Often forgotten entirely in move-in cleans:

• Wipe inside and outside of washer and dryer (if included)
• Clean the dryer lint trap and the duct behind the dryer — this is a fire hazard if neglected
• Wipe down utility shelving
• Clean the utility sink if present
• Mop the floor

DIY move-in cleans typically take 50–100% longer than a professional team — simply because a professional team has the right tools, products, and a system that covers everything without backtracking.

Moving is already one of the most stressful life events there is. The last thing you need is to spend your first weekend in a new home scrubbing someone else’s grime. Our move-in and move-out cleaning service covers every item on this checklist — and then some. We bring all supplies, work as an organized team, and leave your new home genuinely clean before a single box comes through the door. We serve all of Oakland County from our Waterford base — including Troy, Royal Oak, Birmingham, Novi, West Bloomfield, Pontiac, White Lake, and Commerce Township.

This is the method our team uses almost every time. It’s fast, effective, and uses nothing but white vinegar and water.

Step 1: Pour 1 cup of water and 1 cup of white vinegar into a microwave-safe bowl.

Step 2: Place the bowl in the microwave and heat on HIGH for 3–5 minutes, until the mixture boils and the interior is fully steamed up.

Step 3: Do NOT open the door immediately. Let the steam sit inside for another 5 minutes. This is the step most people skip — and it makes all the difference. The steam loosens everything.

Step 4: Carefully remove the bowl (it will be hot — use oven mitts or a towel). Wipe down the ceiling, walls, and floor of the microwave with a damp microfiber cloth. The grime should come off with almost no pressure.

Step 5: Remove the turntable and wipe underneath it. Then clean the turntable separately in the sink with warm soapy water.

Why vinegar works: The acetic acid in white vinegar breaks down grease and loosens baked-on food particles. The steam does the physical work of softening everything so you don’t have to scrub.

Tip from our team: Add a few drops of essential oil (lemon or lavender) to the vinegar-water mix if you don’t love the vinegar smell. It dissipates quickly anyway, but the oil makes the process more pleasant.

If your microwave has a lingering burnt smell — popcorn, fish, last Tuesday’s leftovers — lemon is your answer. Same concept as vinegar, but with natural deodorizing power.

Step 1: Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water. Squeeze in the juice of half a lemon and drop the lemon half into the bowl.

Step 2: Microwave on HIGH for 3–4 minutes until fully steaming.

Step 3: Leave the door closed for 5 minutes.

Step 4: Remove bowl carefully, wipe down all interior surfaces with a microfiber cloth.

The citric acid in lemon works just like vinegar to cut through grease, but the natural lemon oils neutralize odors at the same time. Your microwave will smell genuinely clean — not just “less bad.”

Some stains don’t respond to steam alone — especially if something boiled over and baked on through multiple reheating cycles. For those, baking soda paste is the move.

Make the paste: Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with just enough dish soap and water to form a thick paste — consistency of toothpaste.

Apply it: Spread the paste directly onto the stained areas. Let it sit for 10 minutes.

Scrub gently: Use a soft sponge or old toothbrush to work the paste into the stain using circular motions. The mild abrasiveness of baking soda lifts residue without scratching the surface.

Wipe clean: Remove with a damp microfiber cloth, then wipe again with clean water to remove any paste residue.

Important: After using baking soda, always do a final wipe with a clean damp cloth. Leftover baking soda residue can cause a white film if it dries.

The door glass gets overlooked but it’s one of the most visible parts — and one of the grimiest.

Inside of the door: Use your vinegar steam method first. If splatters remain, apply a small amount of dish soap to a damp cloth and wipe in circular motions. Rinse with a clean damp cloth.

Between the door glass panels: Some microwaves have two layers of glass with a gap between them. If you see grime in there, it usually got in through the ventilation slots. This is a manufacturer-specific repair situation — don’t try to pry the door apart. Contact the brand’s service center.

Outside of the door: Wipe with a damp microfiber cloth and a few drops of dish soap. For stainless steel exteriors, always wipe in the direction of the grain to avoid streaking.

The door seal (gasket): This rubber strip around the door edge collects crumbs and grease but almost nobody cleans it. Use a damp cloth or an old toothbrush with a little dish soap. A dirty gasket can affect the door seal — and a compromised seal is a microwave safety issue.

The turntable is the most food-exposed part of your microwave and the easiest to clean properly — because you can take it out.

Remove it carefully and let it cool completely if the microwave was recently used. Hot glass + cold water = cracked glass.

Option A — Sink wash: Wash with warm soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge. Rinse and dry thoroughly before replacing.

Option B — Dishwasher: Most glass turntables are dishwasher-safe. Check your microwave manual to confirm. Top rack only.

The roller ring underneath: Remove this plastic ring and wash it by hand with soapy water. Grease and debris collect here and cause the turntable to rotate unevenly or make grinding sounds.

Stubborn stains on the turntable: Soak it in a mixture of warm water and dish soap for 10–15 minutes, then scrub gently.

This is one of the most-asked questions we get. Someone popped popcorn too long, or something boiled over and burned — and now every time you use the microwave, the smell comes back.

Here’s the multi-step fix:

Step 1 — Deep steam with lemon: Run Method 2 (lemon steam) twice back to back. Let it steam 5 minutes each time.

Step 2 — Activated charcoal trick: After cleaning, place a small bowl of baking soda OR activated charcoal inside the closed microwave overnight. Both absorb odors passively.

Step 3 — Coffee grounds: A small bowl of dry coffee grounds left overnight also works well for absorbing stubborn smells.

Step 4 — Check the interior coating: If the smell persists after all of this, the interior coating may be damaged (chipped or burned). Once the coating is compromised, the smell is almost impossible to fully eliminate. At that point, the microwave should be replaced — a damaged interior coating is also a safety concern.

Using abrasive scrubbers: Steel wool and rough scrub pads scratch the interior coating. Once scratched, that coating can flake and contaminate food — and the scratches trap more grease going forward.

Spraying cleaner directly inside: Always apply cleaner to a cloth first, then wipe. Spraying directly risks liquid getting into the ventilation slots and electrical components.

Not letting steam sit: Running the steam cycle and immediately opening the door wastes most of the benefit. The 5-minute rest is what actually softens the residue.

Cleaning while it’s still hot: Always let the microwave cool after use before cleaning. Steam burns are real, and a hot interior makes products less effective.

Forgetting the door seal: As mentioned — the gasket around the door needs regular attention. It’s a hygiene issue and a safety issue.

Start with a completely clear space. Remove:

• Shampoo bottles, soaps, razors — everything from the shower and tub ledge
• Items from the countertop
• Bath rugs and towels (throw them in the wash now)
• Trash can (clean it separately)
• Any decorations or organizers

You cannot deep clean around objects. A clear surface = a clean surface.

Squirt toilet bowl cleaner under the rim and let it sit for at least 10–15 minutes. Don’t touch it yet. Just let the product work.

This is the #1 thing most people skip. They apply cleaner and immediately scrub. But the chemicals need time to break down mineral deposits, hard water stains, and bacteria. Patience here saves you scrubbing energy later.

This is the rule we live by: always clean top to bottom. Dust falls down, so you don’t want to clean your floor and then have ceiling dust fall on it.

Hit these areas with a duster:

• Exhaust fan — this one is always neglected. Dust buildup here circulates back into your air. If possible, remove the cover and wipe the blades with a damp cloth.
• Light fixtures (turn off the power first if you’re going to wet-wipe them)
• Top of the mirror frame
• Top of cabinets and shelves
• Corners where cobwebs build up
• Window sill and ledge

Spray glass cleaner directly onto a microfiber cloth (not the mirror — it drips and streaks). Wipe in a circular motion, then finish with a dry buff.

For foggy or cloudy mirrors: Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Same technique. This works better than most commercial glass cleaners for mineral buildup.

If you have glass shower doors, apply a paste of baking soda and a few drops of dish soap. Let it sit 5 minutes, then scrub with a non-scratch pad. The soap scum breaks apart without scratching the glass.

This is the biggest zone — and where most people’s “regular cleaning” falls short. Here’s the full breakdown:

Shower walls and tiles: Spray with all-purpose disinfectant or a diluted bleach solution. Let it sit 3–5 minutes. Scrub with a stiff brush using circular motions. Pay special attention to the area around fixtures (faucet base, showerhead connection) — grime loves to hide there.

Grout lines: Apply baking soda paste directly to grout and scrub with an old toothbrush. For dark or stained grout, use hydrogen peroxide instead of water in your paste. For black spots (mold), a bleach-based grout cleaner is your best bet.

Note: If your grout is consistently moldy and coming back fast, that’s a ventilation problem. Make sure your exhaust fan works properly — it’s a major factor in bathroom mold.

Showerhead: Fill a plastic bag with white vinegar, secure it around the showerhead with a rubber band or twist tie, and let it soak for 20–30 minutes. This dissolves mineral deposits and improves water pressure. Simple and effective.

Bathtub: Sprinkle baking soda all over the tub surface, spray with vinegar (it’ll foam — that’s fine), let it sit a few minutes, then scrub and rinse. For tough ring stains, make a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, apply, let sit 10 minutes, then scrub.

People forget how much bacteria lives on a bathroom faucet handle. You touch it right after blowing your nose or before washing your hands — think about that.

Sink basin: Sprinkle baking soda in the basin, add a few drops of dish soap, scrub with a brush, rinse.

Faucet and handles: Spray with disinfectant. Use an old toothbrush to get into the base where the faucet meets the countertop — that’s where soap and grime build up most.

Drain: Remove the stopper if possible. Clean it with a brush and hot soapy water. Pour a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar, wait 15 minutes, then flush with boiling water. Eliminates slow drains and odors.

Countertop and backsplash: Wipe down with disinfectant spray and a microfiber cloth. Toothpaste splatter, hair products, lotion residue — all of it builds up over time.

By now, your toilet bowl cleaner has been sitting 15+ minutes. Good. Let’s finish the job.

Outside first, inside last — always. The outside is dirtier than people realize.

Outside cleaning order:

1. Flush lever / handle — wipe with disinfectant (most-touched, least-cleaned surface in the bathroom)
2. Tank — top and sides
3. Lid — top and underside
4. Seat — both sides (use disinfectant spray, let sit 30 seconds, wipe)
5. Bowl exterior — sides and base
6. Behind the toilet — get down there with a cloth. Dust and hair accumulate here every single week. This is one of those spots that separates a real deep clean from a surface wipe.

Inside: Scrub under the rim with your toilet brush — work in circular motions. Get all the way around. Flush, then wipe the brush holder with disinfectant too.

Toilet tank (often skipped): Remove the lid and peek inside. If you see buildup, mineral deposits, or discoloration — pour a cup of white vinegar in the tank, let it sit an hour, then flush several times.

Baseboards are a dust and hair magnet. Wipe them down with a damp microfiber cloth. If they have grime buildup, a diluted all-purpose cleaner on a cloth works great.

While you’re down there, check the bottom of the walls. Splash zones around the sink and toilet base often have dried residue that gets ignored for months.

Always last. You’ve been cleaning surfaces above the floor this whole time — dust and drips have settled. Now you mop.

Tile floors: Sweep or vacuum first to remove hair and debris. Mop with a diluted floor cleaner. For grout between floor tiles, use the same toothbrush + baking soda technique from the shower section.

Vinyl floors: Skip the vinegar — it degrades vinyl over time. Use a mild floor cleaner and a damp (not soaking) mop.

Let the floor dry before placing the bath mat back.

Once everything is clean and dry:

• Put fresh towels back
• Replace bath mat (freshly washed)
• Organize products back on shelves/shower ledge
• Spray a light mist of air freshener or diffuse some essential oil if you like

Take a look. That’s what a real deep clean looks like.

This matters more than people think. If the machine is warm, residue is softer and spreads instead of lifting away. Also, unplugging protects you if water drips where it shouldn’t.

• Open the lid.
• Remove the filter basket and the coffee pot.
• Set everything on the counter.
• Look inside the machine. If you see loose grounds, tap them out into the trash. 
• Don’t rinse yet.

Fill your sink with warm water and add a small amount of dish soap. Not a squeeze bottle full. Just enough to make the water feel slippery. Place the pot and filter basket in the water. Use the soft side of the sponge. Apply gentle pressure. Let the soap do the work. Scrubbing hard scratches the surface, and scratches trap oils later.
Pay attention to:

• The rim of the pot
• The inside bottom where coffee sits
• The underside of the lid

If you feel a slick, greasy layer, keep washing until it feels clean, not slippery. Rinse everything thoroughly. Soap residue affects taste. Set the parts on a towel to air dry. Don’t dry them yet.

This step cleans the inside tubes where you can’t see.

• Mix equal parts white vinegar and water. For a standard machine, I usually fill the reservoir halfway with vinegar and then top it off with water.
• Pour the mixture into the water reservoir.
• Place the empty pot back on the warming plate. Put the filter basket back in, but do not add a paper filter or coffee.

• Turn the machine on.
• Let it brew until about half of the liquid has moved into the pot.
• Then turn the machine off. 

This pause is important. The vinegar needs time to sit inside the heating element and tubes. I let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes. During this time, you may smell vinegar. That’s normal. If you see white flakes later, that means mineral buildup is breaking loose. That’s a good sign.

• After the wait, turn the machine back on and let it finish brewing completely.
• When it’s done, turn the machine off. Carefully pour the hot liquid from the pot down the sink.
• Look inside the pot. If you see cloudy residue or particles, that means the cleaning worked.

This is where many people rush and ruin the taste of their next few coffees.

• Fill the reservoir with clean water only.
• Run a full brew cycle. Pour it out.

Repeat this step at least once more. I often do it twice, especially if the machine was very dirty. After the second rinse, smell the inside of the pot and the basket area. If you still smell vinegar, do one more rinse.
